ABYC Members Named to ISO Standards Group

ANNAPOLIS, Md. Staff and technical board members of the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) have been appointed to leadership roles in the development of the International Standards Organization (ISO) small craft standards, representing the United States.

“The payoff for U.S. delegation engaging in ISO standards development is far greater than most realize,” said ABYC Technical VP Craig Scholten. “We collaborate with the industry in efforts to harmonize requirements with ABYC standards and support boating safety internationally, allowing builders to standardize products and better succeed in export markets.”

Working groups of experts negotiate all aspects of the development of ISO standards, including scope, key definitions, content and alignment with the Recreational Craft Directive. The working groups met in Berlin, Germany, the week of June 19 and reviewed 20 different ISO standards. Plenary meetings of TC 188 and TC 188/SC2 were also held with new appointments of U.S. delegates to leadership roles within the working groups and TC 188.
